Raipur: Kalinga University, Faculty of Pharmacy conducted Webinar on the occasion of “World Hepatitis Day” on 29 July under the guidance of Dr. Sandip Prasad Tiwari (Principal) Faculty of Pharmacy. The event was coordinated by Mr. Pranjul Shrivastava (Assistant Professor) and Ms. Srishti Namdev (Assistant Professor).The organizing committee included following faculty members, Mr. Sudeep Mandal, MsRajni Yadav, Mr. Deependra Soni, Ms. Khusboo Gupta and Mr. Saurabh Sharma. The day creates awareness of the global burden of viral hepatitis and to recognize the discovery of the Hepatitis B virus in 1967 by Nobel prize-winning scientist Dr. Baruch Blumberg and his subsequent achievements in developing a diagnostic test and vaccine for the virus. In this webinar the Keynote Speaker was Dr. K. Srinivasa Rao (Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacy, Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Amarkantak, M.P). The webinar was attended by students of M. Pharma, B. Pharma and D. Pharma. The webinar was based on creation of awareness to honor the struggle of patients suffering from the disease. Dr. K. Srinivasa Rao spoke on the overview of Hepatitis, treatment aspect of the disease, their types, precautions, complications involved in the disease.

The talk was focused on the change in our food habits as a precautionary measure for the disease. Even after the advancement of medical science the treatment for the chronic hepatitis includes administration of antiviral drugs which in turn also have extreme side effects. The major challenges faced in discovery and formulation of treatment for chronic Hepatitis includes the changing features as overall updated population-based epidemiological studies of viral hepatitis in most Latin American countries are still a significant challenge. This barrier is crucial to define health policies in the region. Other challenges explained by the speaker included diagnosing HCV infection is that it is often asymptomatic and that individuals seek medical attention only when they develop symptoms or signs of liver disease. Apart from the challenges linked to the disease and its diagnosis, new drug discovery play a major role as the hurdle for treatment of Hepatitis. As explained, newer drug discovery takes in huge monetary investment as well as time aspect, even after which the chances of success is uncertain. Another important point included by the expert was based on the need of an alternative medication based on Ayurveda and plant based medicament. As Ayurveda have been practiced and tested for various disease treatment since ages, owing to a need to develop phyto-pharmaceuticals for treatment for diseases including Hepatitis. Supporting requirement for the need for plant based medicament are the reduced side effects found in case of plant based medication. The talk included about the explanation about drug development process. The webinar gave a chance for interactive questionnaire session to the participant for expanding their knowledge and clear their doubts regarding Hepatitis.
